What post-construction cleaning includes: rough, final and touch-up phases

Post-construction cleaning is often done in phases that follow the project. The names vary between contractors, but the work is often split into three: rough, final and touch-up. Here's what each one usually means, so you can plan with your cleaning company.

Rough clean

Usually done after major work, while trades may still be on site. The focus is typically on removing debris and heavy dust so the next stage of work can go on.

Final clean

Usually done when construction work is finished. The focus is typically on detailed cleaning of surfaces, fixtures, windows and floors so the space is ready to use.

Touch-up clean

Usually done just before the owner, tenant or inspector walks the space. It typically covers dust and marks left after the final clean and any last items.

How to plan it

  • Share the project stage and expected dates with your cleaning company.
  • Agree on the scope for each phase in writing.
  • Tell them the square footage and the type of space.
